Baotou Teachers College is located in Baotou, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region—a city renowned as the "Steel City on the Prairie" and celebrated as the "World Capital of Rare Earths" and the "World Green Silicon Capital." The institution traces its origins to Baotou Teachers College, founded in 1958. In 1996, it was renamed Baotou Teachers Junior College. In 2000, the institution merged with the former Baotou Normal School and Baotou College of Education, upgrading to a full-fledged undergraduate college and adopting the name Baotou Teachers College. In 2003, it merged with the former Baotou University of Iron and Steel Technology and Baotou Medical College to form Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology. In 2004, with the approval of the People's Government of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, it regained independent legal entity status under the name Baotou Teachers College of Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology. The college began recruiting postgraduate students in 2007. In 2008, it passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation with excellent results. In 2017, it successfully underwent the Ministry of Education’s audit assessment of undergraduate teaching.
