Hohhot: the capital of China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is a vibrant city blending rich cultural heritage with modern development. Known as the "Green City" (a translation of its Mongolian name), it serves as the political, economic, and cultural hub of Inner Mongolia. Established during the Ming Dynasty (16th century) by Altan Khan, it historically flourished as a key trade center along the Silk Road's northern routes. Today, Hohhot showcases a unique fusion of Mongolian and Han Chinese traditions. Visitors encounter Buddhist temples like Dazhao and Five-Pagoda Temple alongside modern landmarks. The city is renowned for its dairy industry, hosting headquarters of major brands like Yili and Mengniu. Its cuisine features Mongolian specialties such as roast lamb and dairy products, alongside northern Chinese dishes. Surrounded by grasslands, Hohhot offers access to Inner Mongolia's natural wonders, including the Gegentala Grassland and Xiangshawan Desert. With a population exceeding 3 million, the city balances urban growth with ecological initiatives, promoting renewable energy and sustainable practices. Annual events like the Nadam Festival celebrate Mongolian sports and culture, embodying the region's nomadic spirit in a contemporary setting.
